16.11.2007 PGNiG SA, GAZ- SYSTEM S.A. and Energinet.dk have signed an agreement on cooperation regarding pipeline to connect Poland and Denmark

Energinet.dk, the transmission system operator for electricity and natural gas in Denmark, PGNiG, the Polish oil and natural gas enterprise, and GAZ-SYSTEM S.A., the Polish gas transmission system operator, have entered into a cooperation agreement - being a next step towards the Baltic Pipe project implementation.

The final decision on the implementation of the Baltic Pipe project is expected to be made in 2008. However, the physical framework of the project will only be laid down after obtaining all the necessary permits. The project has to be approved by the supervisory boards of all three enterprises and the energy ministers.
The Baltic Pipe project is closely connected to another ongoing project - Skanled - in which Energinet.dk and PGNiG SA together with a number of other participants analyse the possibilities of transporting Norwegian natural gas to Norway, Sweden and Denmark via an offshore pipeline. Thus the Baltic Pipe makes it possible to transport Norwegian gas to Poland and to trade gas from Poland to Denmark.
“The Baltic Pipe will be constructed to handle flow in both directions and will increase Denmark’s security of gas supply and increase competition on the gas market to the benefit of the consumers. Both the Skanled and the Baltic Pipe projects are the natural consequences of Energinet.dk’s social responsibility for security of supply and a proper functioning gas market. When the Danish gas production in the North Sea will decline after 2010 it is necessary to expand the gas infrastructure to give access to new gas reserves,” Peter Jørgensen, Vice President Energinet.dk comments.
The cooperation agreement is a natural consequence of the letter of intent signed by Energinet.dk and PGNiG in April 2007, concerning the construction of the Baltic Pipe.
"We are glad that GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. has joined the alliance we've formed with our Danish partners, since GAZ- SYSTEM S.A. has an important role in the project. I'm convinced that the Baltic Pipe project will help to secure future natural gas supplies to the European market. The Baltic Pipe project is a crucial element of the strategy targeted at strengthening the company and securing gas supplies for PGNiG clients," says Krzysztof G?ogowski, President of PGNiG SA.
“For GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. as a gas transmission system operator, locating the source of gas supplies in northern Poland will enable a gas transmission that will meet the requirements of new customers in the region. Such measures will have a significant effect on the improvement of natural gas transmission throughout Poland as we will no longer have to transport gas that was obtained in points located on the eastern borders of Poland to these regions. Furthermore, we consider the construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline as a significant element increasing gas supply security in Poland by connecting the Danish and Polish transmission systems as well as by helping drive the market in the region towards further development. For GAZ-SYSTEM S.A., participation in the project is connected with the necessity of conducting appropriate studies and analysis that will allow the specification of the technical conditions of natural gas collection from the new direction of supply,” Igor Wasilewski, President of the Management Board of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A., states.
